Supervision is the third studio album by English singer Elly Jackson, known professionally as La Roux. It was released on 7 February 2020 through Jackson's own independent label Supercolour Records. While it doesn't really do anything original or groundbreaking, and doesn't feel as fresh as "The Way Home", it does expand its lyrical content into a more extroverted tone, putting aside personal reflections and stories in favour of commenting on social issues. I'm a bit torn on this album myself as while I do think it's still a solid album in terms of craftsmanship, Stefan's production skills are masterful as always and his vocals has this uncanny ability to pull you into the music and convey intense emotion, the lyrical content makes it a little cringy at times, at least for me as I do prefer Stefan's more introverted songs and I still feel he's much better at doing those than extroverted songs. If you've heard the previous THYX albums, there's nothing really new here. But if you're like me and love THYX and the musical style he's created with it, this can hardly be called a disappointment. But it definitely falls in the middle a bit of my favourite work of his. Still, there's a few standout tracks on the album. "Waiting For You" starts off with a killer bassline and builds up into a pretty hard-hitting floorfiller anthem. "Loyalty" conveys such intense emotion and rage that it almost scares me and the way the melody almost stays firmly within minor chords and still works as brilliantly as it does says a lot about Stefan's songwriting skills. "Don't Let Yourself Go" also perfectly embodies everything I love about THYX, with its distinct atmosphere. My favourite track has to be "Every Time" though, a strong track that I feel would be a better single than "Robots Don't Lie" which I feel is almost the weakest track on the album. It takes the form of an electro-rock anthem with very strong emotional and romantic lyrics.If you enjoyed the former THYX albums I definitely recommend this one, but if you haven't heard THYX before, I would definitely recommend starting with "The Way Home" or "Below The Street".

Not sure where to start. Huge success. And with the previous THYX album, this clearly shows Poiss is one of the master pop song crafters of this generation. The Way Home set the bar high, and somehow managed to transcend even Mind.In.A.Box. There is such a humanness to THYX's music that immediately grabs you with it's vulnerability. With Super Vision, Poiss moves further to more organic sounding sounds mixed in with the electronics and this adds to the emotion on display. The music is incredibly full bodied, impeccably produced and full of nuance that pays increasing dividend with repeat listens. The best pop music can both completely accessible and deeply subtle all at one, and THYX i believe to be peerless in this regard. Of course, I would be remiss if I did not comment on his voice, as Poiss has one of the most passionate signing voices i have heard in a long time, similar to the signer of Legend, or if that is a bit too obscure, like vintage Billy Idol but without the rock and roll gravel, if you follow me, :). His lyrics which has always been a strong point in all of the works are especially good here, especially on tracks like Our Only Home, Every Time and Will they Learn. He strikes a nice balance between expanding his subject matter to social issues and then contracting to more personal reflections. He continues to be a master of utilizing a huge variety of vocal effects as well as many tricks of pop song craft to make the vocals varied throughout the album and within each song, and even makes excellent use of the dreaded auto-tune in way that makes sense and fits. Technical stuff aside, the emotion, passion and care that went into this music ensures that it will be something that will endure in my heart and mind for many years to come. I feel lucky to have this and all of his other albums, lucky that Poiss stepped into the realm of releasing his music to the public as I understand that his "day job" likely could have supported him just fine without taking the risk of releasing music. Of course, there will always be nay-sayers, much like the gas mask toting Irios who also reviews this here, and of course, if Irios produces something as good down the road, I would be happy to give it a try, but I would encourage anyone who is not concerned about what "scene" this fits in, who appreciates emotionally driven electronic pop music that can touch your soul if you allow it the space to do so to give this and all of the other albums by THYX a go. FAR, FAR from a waste of time, this is essential.

Not sure where to start. Huge disappointment. And with the previous THYX album, this clearly shows Poiss struggles to create innovative music by himself. All tracks are just generic monotone and boring electronic stuff following the same recipe from the other releases. I had to try three times before I bothered listening through the whole album. It's only 45 minutes long, so that says a lot, doesn't it. Tracks like "Für Immer" ... generic fuzzy rock guitars, and really weak acoustic sound on percussions and other instruments. Probably trying to be radio friendly. No, this is just a waste of time.

Sad, but unfortunately, quite accurate. He's gotten lost in retro-isms, despite how futuristic this one attempts to come across as being. If you wish to hear what he's aiming for, check out 'Oceanscape' by William Goldstein.
