He began his career working with Julian Cope in the late 1980s, becoming a member of Cope's touring band. A collaboration with Cope in 1993 followed, as the experimental duo Queen Elizabeth. In 1997, former Cope guitarist Mike Mooney invited Thighpaulsandra to fill in for the departing Kate Radley on a Spiritualized tour, where he remained until early 2008. In 1998 he. What to say about Thighpaulsandra's debut solo disc? Amazing? Breathtaking? Incredibly challenging? All of the above of course. I got into his music from the coil side of things, and arguably, fans of that band will be most at home here, as opposed to his fans that come from the spiritualized or Julian cope side of things. This is a truly massive double disc overloaded with moods, shades and ideas, and an excellently brilliant, excellently magickal art style as well! there are essentially three directions that play a powerful game of tug of war on the album: dark ambient, electronic workouts like "limping across the sky" or the beginning and end of "Michael publicity window", free rock/jazz experiments: "beneath the frozen lake of stars" and concentrated glam/prog/rock numbers "we the descending", the middle part of "Michael publicity window" and the excellent instrumental "home butt club". However, for the most part, all of the influences bleed into one and other. On one particular playthorugh, the coil collaboration "optical black" nearly made my head explode. No, really! This is a record where the quiet moments sound great quiet, and the loud moments will blow you away with their power and conviction. The whole record is very experimental, and coil fans looking for an EXACT replica of his work on albums like Music to play in the dark vol. 1 and 2 will likely be a bit let down. However, those influences are in there, just more mixed in with everything else. Michael publicity window, my favorite song, is a good example of that, with almost 10 minutes of spine tingling intense ambience punctuated by several minutes of a grungy rock song about male prostitutes, only to deftly transition back into ambience for the songs drifting conclusion. Lyrically, thighpaulsandra explores more overtly homosexual themes than coil have in many, many years. If this bothers you (like, apparently it bothered his old band mate, Julian cope) then best to stay away. However, I would think that pretty shallow reason to pass up on such an amazing piece of music that comes highly recommended to the coil camp.

I think it's unfair and inaccurate to portray Julian Cope as homophobic. Based on interviews with Thighpaulsandra, Julian Cope felt his family was threatened by his association with Thighpaulsandra, whose artistic vision includes the exploration of taboos that stretch the limits of even the most open minded. From a 2006 interview with TPS, "As I grew older, these fantasies mutated more toward rape and sexual abuse, and as these are largely taboo subjects even among many gay men, I feel it is my duty to explore them." In the same interview, "For me, it is the element of control and the fear in others — not submission or aggression — that excites me." From the same interview again, "The taboo of paedophilia haunts me constantly. My boundaries on this and many related subjects seem to be way over the horizon in comparison with popular opinion. Some of my earliest memories are of wanting intimacy and closeness with a male adult, and I remember fantasising over some older boys who visited the school to play rugby when I saw them taking a shower. I must have been six or seven years old, and they had reached puberty. I longed to be close to an older boy, and although I knew nothing of sex at that age, the male body became an obsession for me. I don’t feel that this is wrong or should be the subject of public morality. I find many younger boys attractive, and I’m sure there must be many young boys who feel as I did."I don't offer these quotations to damn, but to suggest that not everyone is able to accept this kind of unflinching vision, or his attitude regarding child sexuality. To suggest that Julian Cope was simply unable to accept frank homosexual themes is not true.
