"Break Night" is the track for me on this 12" very simplistic, but has that touch of magic, its all bout the simple synth loop that pitches up and down through the track that just seem to get me into a hypnotic groove."Ocean" has a tougher vibe, with is choppy beats and harsher synth stab, which is built upon as the track builds, giving the track more of an energetic feel. Great 12" for any Strictly / Old School House fan.

This is getting a re-issue in 2017 due to be released in September

Cobandis
Both sides are VERY "techy" house (this would no doubt be called "tech house" if released in the last 15 years), definetly made for the late night warehouse grip.

Skunk Black
This has nothing to do with tech house yongin. This is bboy shit. Gorgeous house break extended

House music isn't my cup of tea. Especially American House. My god, "Night Break" is such a fucking good track. Now, you would think that lasting this long it would start to get repetitive and / or boring. That is a problem I face with House music in general. Particularly with Dub versions that last for 10+ minutes. Producers tend to use a generic House drum for 3-4 minutes before it gets any good. Even though, I don't particularly enjoy Armand Van Helden's music, I have to give him props for "Break Night" because it manages to stay relevant during it's whole 12 minute duration despite being quite simplistic. Catchy minimalistic tribal drum with a very catchy house melody. Unlike some other House tracks which many people seem to massively praise and call "classic" "Break Night" is a no-brainer House classic. "Ocean" is very boring so I won't bother describing it.

If house music isn't your cup of tea, in particular American house (the motherland of house), perhaps refrain from reviewing house music? Just a thought ;-)

Gralinda
While I agree on your comments of Break Night, this is maybe one of the most clueless reviews I've come across on Discogs. Do your homework!

Cordann
From everything your wrote it is quite clear that your opinion is irrelevant as it displays your lack of basic understanding of house music

Elildelm
I suggest you listen to van heldens other moniker- hardhead -demon dreams (gravediggin mix). Brilliant dark chunky chugger of a tune

Silvermaster
you havent listened to enough American house then, because its where house came from

Bumand
Ocean synth reminds me some notes of the synth of Model 500 - Neptune... And that was sampled from The Robots by Kraftwerk. However I think those notes by Armand are original, just a little bit similar.

past, presence and future of music. one of the most "intelligent" and deep tracks in Strictly Rhythm history. "break night" it's like neverending story, i cannot push the stop buttom in my turntable...it;s always from begining to the end...12 minutes of history of tech-house.

I'm surprised that no one has commented on this, but Break Night seems very much to be a variant of his Get Deep mix sans vocals of Barbara Tucker - I Get Lifted... Anyway I filed this one away back then, because: 1) I actually got tired of Armand's hard kick drum sounds from the early-mid 90s; 2) it seemed too much of a jack from his IGL Get Deep mix (gosh I sure was annoyingly critical back then). Anyway, I think this one comes back to visit in the mental radio and the groove winds its way back to the top. I am still at a yes or no on AVH, but I acknowledge he made some lasting and catching grooves, with this one being amongst his best. My last memory of this (for the DC folks) was David Javate playing this on the back deck at Tracks long before the Nationals stadium got dropped on top of that location.

Kazijora
crazy, i don't believe I ever heard you play, but have known of you from the scene back when i used to hit the clubs. i miss Tracks. a lot of us out there still do. deep house 4 life!

Kadar
Crazy! I was just going to comment to your post, agreeing that this mix is very similar to the Get Deep mix of I Get Lifted. I'm listening to an old cd that I mixed around 1999 with Break Night on it (that is why I came to Discogs tonight) and I'll be darned if I didn't do a quick mix out of Break Night into that mix of I Get Lifted!! Too crazy!! Peace to you, DC brother! Michele Miruski

Envias
legendary peace of music

I heard this the other day for the first time on a Levon Vincent mix. Fucking-A, how did I miss this first time round? What a monster.

Beranyle
One of the best modern house riffs ever made (even though it is now 15 years old), I used to play this out all the time, AVH was cool then before it went silly and this alias produced such an infectious mixable house groove. It was always underrated until I last witnessed it at DC10 Ibiza in 2008 and was feckin ace! I hope Armand played it and not sampled it but if it was sampled would love to know where it came from. CLASSIC!

The B-side of this is quite simply an amazing monster of a track. It's shameful to say, but while I had heard it before, I only figured out the title yesterday in a tracklisting. But man, what an absolutely killer, classic track. I've been getting increasingly into the timeless side of vinyl. I guess that's the natural progression once you pass the five hundred or so record mark. I have a few records that today I'd just as soon give away, but now I'd like to think that I know the true sound: that blend of perfect harmony, unique notes, unimaginable loops, and just raw, funky progression that defines excellence and raises a track from the sufficiently mediocre to the pantheon of forever great electronic music. This is it. "Ocean" is where it's at, still, fifteen years later. I won't even explain the track; there's no point—it's that good. Suffice to say it's very loopy, but at the same time very rich and full of sound. A hundred years from now this will still be pushing the limits. At least one can hope!

Ranenast
'The Mole People' is an alias that reflects the underground nature of the project and this release certainly justifies this. I heard 'Break Night' just a week ago and OMG its an amazing track! The tune is based on a simple synth/bassline and is filled with so much soul! Clearly an epic; you get that classic feeling when you here it (it keeps ringing in your head). Proof of Armand's artistic genius. This is a must have in any house collection.

Benn
This is really funny, I remember that in 1995 in a magazine was written that the labes were confused, so that would mean, that the one track all the people love is not break night, but ocean. No matter, this track is one of the most popular house tracks and an alltime-favourite of really many famous dj´s, still!! You could say that it was a different time, when this track was made, but this is too easy. This lovely peace of music is just that, what you call a hit! No questions in what drawer you have to classify it and something you can´t say definitely 'minimal', 'deep', 'tribal-attitude' or whatever!! Just a mothaf%&§"$ great song!
