Its personal psychology, meticulous compositions, and world-sized choruses evoked the loss of control in an overwhelming era. No track on Songs From the Big Chair exemplifies this free-roaming, tessellating approach more than its opener, the No. 1 single Shout. As Hughes told RBMA, set up a little drum box and a little synthesizer with a bass tone. He pressed the button on the drum box, and he programmed this little beat and it had these little chimey bells and a clapping drum beat. Tears for Fears were always more ambitious than the average synth pop group. From the beginning, the duo of Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith were tackling big subjects - their very name derived from Arthur Janov's primal scream therapy, and his theories were evident throughout their debut, The Hurting. Smith left the group early in the '90s, and Orzabal continued with Tears for Fears, pursuing more sophisticated and pretentious directions to a smaller audience. Orzabal and Smith met as children in Bath, England. Both boys came from broken homes, and Smith was leaning toward juvenile delinquency. Tears for Fears are an English pop rock band formed in Bath, England, in 1981 by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith. Founded after the dissolution of their first band, the mod-influenced Graduate, Tears for Fears was initially associated with the new wave synthesizer bands of the early 1980s. Later, the band branched out into mainstream rock and pop and attained international chart success. Tears for Fears was part of the MTV-driven Second British Invasion of the US. This is a very bad pressing....bumps in A1....many clicks all over....

"Songs from the Big Chair" eschews the entrenched bleakness and psychological viewpoint of its predecessor and instead champions emotional restoration. Such a bold thematic approach combined with the fact the duo - Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith - were exponents of primal scream therapy enabled them to access an array of themes and ideas. "The Hurting" was a minimalist, powerful yet understated synthpop outing firmly ensconced in its own neurosis, and although "Songs from the Big Chair" derives its title from Sybil, a child abuse victim with multiple personalities whose recovery was successful if sessions were conducted from her therapist's chair, a process which correlated with the duo's own experience of scrutiny from the music press, that is the only parallel linking the two albums. "Songs of the Big Chair" is the antithesis of "The Hurting" in almost every sense apart from elective differences. In actuality, the psychological catharsis of "Songs from the Big Chair" sees the duo overcoming the childhood traumas at the core of "The Hurting". Songs such as "Everybody Wants To The Rule the World" and "I Believe" showcase the duo's newfound outward thinking and consciousness of the world around them. In achieving maturity and expansion of their ideology, Tears for Fears created their magnum opus in "Songs from the Big Chair", a rich tapestry of healing and demonstrative expression, aided by a more progressive yet accessible pop sound. "Mothers Talk" was released as a single six months in advance of the album and bridged the gap between the duo's previous new wave style and their adoption of a bolder, edgier outlook and immense soundscapes. However, it wasn't until the release of "Shout" that the duo's previously sparse arrangements were conspicuously more baroque and extroverted. "Shout" impacted the charts and definitively set the tone of the album with an abundance of live instrumentation and power chords, from propulsive percussion to a protracted guitar solo, all of which preceded the commercial appeal of its iridescent, less rigid and dramatic follow-up singles "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" and "Head Over Heels". Every track on the album utilises immediate pop hooks and sophisticated lyrics to attain conceptual connectivity, but therein lies the reason for its brilliance, because although it is at once calculatedly commercial, it also retains the emphatic vagary, pretentiousness and unflinching personal honesty of their less radio-viable work."Songs from the Big Chair" dared to deviate from the successful formula of its forerunner, and although the sonic and lyrical divergence offered new musical horizons for the duo, the album was equally as sweeping and bombastic, perhaps more so. It is the duo's most accomplished, cohesive and universally appealing album, a forthright musical statement that reigns supreme in the crowded market of beautifully executed and exceptionally produced records of the 1980s. Tears for Fears would produce another outstanding album four years later, but there was no possibility of it matching the quality of their sophomore masterpiece.Rating: Indispensable

Is there any material way to determine the 2020 re-issue from the 2014 original issue?

Lamranilv
Just check my 2020 submission Tears For Fears - Songs From The Big Chair I have just released. Apparently only different pressing but I don't own the 2014 version. No reference at all to a "2020 reissue". Gold sticker

6snake6
The most random colour choice imaginable. Grey, clear, grey splatter, silver, black; all work better than this Tango moment.

Abywis
Uhm... When and why did this become so damn expensive?!

Sinredeemer
Because it sounds soooo fucking good that you gotta have it.

Kezan
Hoping for a repress of this mix soon (since the band has confirmed reissuing the Super Deluxe set with the 5.1 mix), but until then, save your money and you can hear this mix now on Tidal (at least in the US).

Beahelm
Great sounding; as expected from a Japanese remaster. Now, if they would do other 80's pop, like Eurthymics or Heaven 17, in the future. Any.

Andriodtargeted
Good re-press.Stand out tracks, I believe, Shout,Everone wants to rule the world and I believe.

Uris
This is the silver label series so its not as dynamic as other mofi pressing done at 45rpm. Make no mistake though, this a damn fine record and an excellent pressing.

Loni
These are back in stock on the HMV uk site https://store.hmv.com/store/music/vinyl/songs-from-the-big-chair-(hmv-exclusive)-orange-vi

Ranicengi
Side 2 is okay, but a serious amount of the magic of Side 1 is absent on this version. Possibly worth it if you bought a copy at retail price on issue, but really not worth paying the Discogs mark-up.

Funny duck
It sounds really really good! Nice pressing quality, it just came a bit warped but it doesn't affect on the sound at all.

Windworker
The Original U.S. pressing doesn't sound bad. Some things could definitely be improved upon though. 'Shout' sounds like it could have a more filled out low end and a tad wider sound stage. I would like to see a little more presence in the vocals in general and more full low end (on most tracks) to balance those soaring highs. The drums and percussion sound good for the most part. However, I still feel like the mix on this original version sounds big and energized enough to make the songs sound good. There is that cold 80s production though. The synths sound amazing though and the saxophone that comes billowing out of the speakers at the beginning of 'Working Time' sounds warm, textured and magical, as does the low end which sounds a bit fuller than on 'Shout.' Overall, I like the way this one sounds. I haven't heard a UK original or any remasters. If anyone wants to chime in and recommend a good version. I'm all ears.

virus
Anyone has the HMV exclusive orange vinyl?anyone selling? Please let me know, thanks

Roru
The bass/warmth is a million times more present, it now sounds like it was recorded with the technology of today. I love it. It show how timeless these songs are and how modern they were for their time. Its a fantastic experience.

Coron
what is this lmao I want this fuck your 3 words

Gashakar
I have two copies, each has different inserts: one has the black insert with photos and credits, while the other is a white one with lyrics. Manufacturer also differs, former is by Polygram Discos, latter is Fonobrás

deadly claw
Not done from the OG masters. The original production master was already a 3rd generation copy, and this is a step or two BELOW THAT. Please use the OG mixdowns for each song, as they are 1st generation. Lose the crossfades on the OG album and spread this out over 2 discs at 45 RPM.This is the ONLY way to improve on the OG 1st pressing on vinyl/cd.

Kinashand
Listened to this back to back with a near mint original UK pressing and I would say its only SLIGHTLY worse... which is pretty cool.

Skunk Black
I originally had the MFSL which I wasn’t bowled over with and parted with it when it went OOP. This back to black sounds a bit better from my recollection of how the MFSL sounded.

Gorisar
My opinion is this: The mix is fairly faithful to the original (Steven Wilson collaborated with Roland Orzabal throughout the project), with some changes that fans like me appreciate and purists will probably shrug their shoulders at. It isn't better or worse than the original mix, just different. FWIW, I dig it.

Winawel
If you know the album as well as I do, I'd say the mixes are quite different. The vocals are more upfront on the songs, and the drums on "The Working Hour" are as well. This is a good thing, but somehow I feel this album works better with the "wetted down" reverb vibe that the original mixes had.I DO like this new version for what it is though...

Daigrel
Oddball UK test pressing of the A side only in plain cover

Thundershaper
As already mentioned...... an outstanding artwork. A rare version of this masterpiece. Recommend.....of course an unsealed copy is better to watch........ found years ago by luck.

Vut
There is a one sided 4 track test pressing of the A side (with a '1' on label and blank B label).Similar A side matrix #'s

Malalrajas
I have a "MADE IN KOREA BY SKC" printed on the bottom rim of the disc with exactly the sameMatrix / Runout of: 824 300-2 04*& no other codes except,SPARS: AAD on the tray insert.Mercury/Phonogram

Jan
very suprisingly good pressing for this universal record.... Ore this is the Bascombe effect even trough a shitty re ( beacuse universal is usually re issuing lps from cds...)

Mallador
The label does indeed say that "Mothers Talk" is 3:53, and it is incorrect. I'm listening to this very piece of vinyl, having just recorded it to digital file. I can confirm that the track lengths for every other track are correct, but "Mothers Talk" is in fact 5:08 (or 5:06 if you don't factor in about :02 of silence after the fade ends). The song hasn't even arrived at the break by 3:53. For comparison, the identical version of the track is on the Remastered Deluxe Edition, and it times out at 5:07.

I_LOVE_228
I had a friend tell me once that the time given for a track is often just approximate, it's not exactly timed. However, this sounds like maybe someone timed the track and stopped it at the :02 of silence instead of adding the extra time after that.

Ffyan
This album sounds really great, it is always exciting listening to it!

Akirg
Interesting mix. However, i don't think it necessarily improves on the original. The drums are more upfront, for example on "The working hour", but sounds less warm overall. The fairlight lead melody on "Shout" is dry now. Needs the reverb IMO. It's great that side 2 uses first generation mixes now. That is an improvement over the original analog production masters.

porosh
Usually MFSL is on point but I swear my 1st press sounds louder and more dynamic. Sorry but I think the 1st press is better when it comes to this press

Rrinel
Also agree. 1st press I found sealed for $3 a decade ago sounds better than this MoFi. I don't have an original Seeds Of Love to compare the MoFi to.

Kulalbine
I as well agree. Mobile Fidelity generally puts out nicely packaged and heavy weight vinyl. I have over 100 titles on MOFI. Some are older copies and others are the newer released versions. I still usually get out my Japanese copy of most titles as my first pick if I have it. I guess it has to do with who does the remastering etc. but I still invest in MOFI releases when they come out if it’s an artist I like. The recently released Donald Fagen One Step Master Analouge reissue is really nice! Very similar to the URHQ releases that MOFI issued in the beginning.I know most people here are strictly vinyl only, but the Japanese Platinum SHM mini lp cd version of this sounds incredible with a DAC or a CD transport thats designed to handle the High Resolution aspect of the disc. I’m sure it’s 24bit/192kHz. I also have another Japanese mini lp cd copy of both this album and “Seeds Of Love” on SHM format from a 2008 series called “ The Golden 80’s Papersleeve Collection” and it’s incredible as well. It’s 24bit/96kHz and this title is a deluxe version catalogue number UICY-94430/1 and is full of Demos and extra tracks. “Seeds Of Love” is not Deluxe, but same resolution. It’s catalouge number UICY-94432. I’m still a true vinyl junkie, but I listen to my Japanese Mini Lp CDs through a set of Byerdynamics headphones as my better half doesn’t have the same musical taste as I do. So if I’m forced to listen to music through headphones, I want it to be the best quality possible.I’ve purchased several of the newer MOFI SACD Hybrid disc and I’ve mostly been disappointed in their sound. It’s essentially taking a stereo recorded disc and the SACD player does the 5.1 sound. It’s just not that great.

Nayatol
I absolutely agree with you! Same for The Seeds Of Love (MOFI - RE)

Gajurus
I just picked up a copy of this that was pressed on brown translucent vinyl. Anybody else's like that?

JOIN
Just got one of these as well. Is it standard for this issue?

Fomand
Could it be that the last digit in the run out is not a zero but the letter C ?

Saberblade
I believe this is the version I have but the etching in the runouts reads:Side 1: 422-824-300-1-AS-ALD O B-20832-ALD SLM [triangle] 9068 1-1 Side 2: 422-824-300-1-BS-ALD O B-20833-ALD SLM [triangle] 9068-X 1-1

My copy has Matrix / Runout: 07314 558 106-2 03 ∗ 51008094.

Q: What is being chanted in Spanish during 'Listen'?A: "Cumple anos chica, no hay que preocuparse"(It is not, "Let me have a chicken nugget in the sand.")

Thetalen
Can anyone tell me if the BLU RAY really is better sounding then CD?

Tygralbine
Yes it is definitely clearer and a lot more fidelity on the bottom end, instruments and vocals.

SING
Just got my copy today. It's amazing! Do it for the multichannel support though, not the audio quality.

blac wolf
I don't think the new stereo mix has the depth & magic of the original stereo mix.

Viashal
The 2014 remix is NOT available on any cd. Only blu ray & vinyl.

Malaunitly
Yes. There are several mixes, including the original, + downloadable flac files in hirez. This is one of the best sounding 5.1 - hirez - recordings out there.

Anarasida
Than which cd? Original? Remastered? Remixed? Imo Stevens remix has an even better separation, indeed an improvement over the original and the old remaster to me.

Water
One of the best and warmest sounding CD's, I have ever heard. They really got the mix spot on (despite the reversed channels issue). http://www.superdeluxeedition.com/feature/exclusive-remixing-tears-for-fears-and-the-stereo-channel-saga/"The 1998 Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs audiophile CD pressing had a reputation for being the only reissue to get the channels ‘right’ by maintaining the stereo image as it was on the original LP. [...] That information effectively proved that the original UK vinyl pressing is incorrect – the stereo image is the wrong way round which is why the master tape has the 1998 Jon Astley note (see above) stating that it should be reversed. That instruction was either not followed for the MFSL CD or as is more likely they used different tape sources (Head Over Heels on the MFSL runs slightly longer than the standard album version which means that cannot have used the same tapes ). [...] The 2014 remaster and the 2014 stereo mix correctly reverse the channels when compared to the original vinyl release which – incredibly – is incorrect. The MFSL is also incorrect so its reputation for being the only ‘correct’ version now lies in tatters!"

Mr_Jeйson
On this release is shown no Label Code, why then is it mentioned at the BaOI?

krot
There are two great songs on this album; you know what they are. The rest range from OK to Good. Definitely worth buying for 5 bucks or so

Sudert
Blue? Okay...

Uttegirazu
This is the rare instance where the people involved in compiling a box set not only managed to gather about every relevant track and rare version but also included nice, non-tacky extras (a great booklet with interviews, tour programme replica), got the mastering right and somehow convinced the beancounters that a 5.1 mix by one of the best guys to do those (Steven Wilson) was in order. All of that in great packaging at a more than reasonable price. An astonishing feat all around. This is how it should be done.

Gianni_Giant
The Seeds of Love Box similar to this one is due for release in 2020. (Source Curt Smith on Twitter)

Naa
I completely agree with you, and I might add : WHERE THE (expletive) IS SEEDS OF LOVE ?!?!?Universal, here's our money. Take it. We beg.

salivan
This is a multi cd/dvd boxed set, not a single cd release. You are trying to compare totally different things.

Tansino
The mastering is very, but very close to the original West Germany Mercury CD release. It almost the same thing, just a little louder and tweaked. I don't think it justifies the purchase... unless you never owned this release, you can probably get away by getting this version without any mastering concerns.

Celen
I agree too: it's a great set.

Gold Crown
I agree, a really good package. But for the lyrics, I have to get out the vinyl album or look in the web. Okay, the reprint of the tour programme lets me forget! ;-D

August
The regular runtime for the UK Extended Mix of Shout is 7:40 minutes. On this CD we find a first generation master from which the later production masters have been created. These were fade out after 7:40 minutes. The full master is not fade out at this point and has a little „error“ at the end as the music is fading out and then fading in again for a few seconds. As this version has never meant to be released in this full and unedited form it appears on no other media so far. Not even on the Super Deluxe Box Set of the Album which will be released in November 2014. Only the 7:40 min. version is included there which is surely disappointing for some fans.In 2013 a shorter „full“ version was a released on the so80s Vol. 8 Sampler which runs 8:02 minutes. It is in fact the MFSL version which is faded out at 8:02 minutes in order to avoid the „error“ at the end.Probably Blank & Jones did not get the permission to release the full MFSL version so this release is maybe the only „longer“ alternative to the original UK Extended Mix beside the MFSL CD.Therefore only the MFSL pressing contains the full and unedited UK Extended Mix worldwide which makes it a true collector’s item.

Qane
Well, I'm not sure if I get you, but yes this is the only (official) release which features the "wasn't meant to be" version. There is a bootleg which copies that track from the MFSL (see other comment), but the MFSL is the way to go.All Vinyl pressings are faded to a max. runtime of 7:40 Minutes (some pressings are even shorter as far as I know).

Kazimi
One thing I'd like to get straight for myself after reading your comment: what you tell us all revolves around the reissues of the longer version on CD, right? From what you say it's clear that the MFSL reissue on CD is the one CD to lay hands on to get to that longer version what "wasn't meant to be" (quotation marks by me). 'Cause I now seriously wonder what the case is when we take this story back to the original vinyl 12" extended mix of Shout. Does that longer version really only exist on the MFSL CD? Or does it also exist on the vinyl 12" records as released when Shout it the charts? Your answer will be highly appreciated! ;)

if you want an example of a synthpop 80s duo hitting the big time in America during the 1980s ..then Big Chair is your album. This is an incredible piece of work. If I wanted to pick albums from each decade, i'd pick White Album from the 60s, Rumours from the 70s - and Big Chair from the 80s. It's THAT good. by the way - if you ever wondered why the likes of Depeche Mode went darker and harder in the tail end of the 1980s , culminating in "Enjoy the Silence" and the Violator album, you can trace it back to Big Chair and Hurting. It's also interesting that about a year after Big Chair that we got the first acid house and techno tracks coming out of Detroit and New York - yes, the likes of Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May were listening to Big Chair. And the rest is history..

Yar
You nailed it. This album is a perfect soundtrack to the 1980's as a whole, including the MTV era and alludes to where music was and where it will be going. The A sides tell the story of the early 1980's and the B sides are Roland & Curt telling us their idea of what they think the late 1980's will be like. Broken/Head Over Heels musically describes the late 1980's better than any other song I've heard and they wrote it back in 1983. The fact that you brought up Depeche Mode along with Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May in your commentary gives me chills in that I have tried to generate that sort of conversation for the better part of 30 years and very few if any would understand the correlations I would make. We are not alone in this universe.

Mariwyn
I have the Mobile Fidelity cd of "Songs…", which has an 8:18 mix of "Shout" that resembles the original UK 12" mix, but is half a minute longer. Does anyone know where this mix comes from?

Use_Death
A missed opportunity, I feel. It's a shame that a lot of the UK 12" mixes were omitted in favour of the oft released US ones, what with it being the country where the band are from. The UK 12s of Shout, Everybody... and Mothers Talk are all missing and these would be great to own on CD. I've given this one a miss and await the next re-release!

Umi
I have this LP sealed and untouched since 1985 . This is the most big mega Rare TFF album with beautifull Photo-booklet. Amazing Peter

Kashicage
The track called "Mothers Talk (US Remix)" on this reissue is mislabeled. I don't know where this mix comes from, but there are some very noticeable differences from the US remix that came out on vinyl (additional guitar, vocal and keyboard parts, etc.). The real US remix of "Mothers Talk" is available on CD on "20th Century Remasters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Tears for Fears", "Shout: The Very Best of Tears for Fears" and the 1999 remaster of "Songs From the Big Chair".
