Shuffle Along Medley From Shuffle Along. Ivan Harold Browning & Eubie Blake. Shuffle Along is a musical with music and lyrics by Noble Sissle and Eubie Blake, and a thin revue-style connecting plot about a mayoral race, written by Flournoy Miller and Aubrey Lyles. The piece premiered on Broadway in 1921, running for 504 performances an unusually long run during that decade. It launched the careers of Josephine Baker, Adelaide Hall, Florence Mills, Fredi Washington and Paul Robeson, and became such a hit that it caused curtain time traffic jams on West 63rd Street. It had. Shuffle Along 1950 contains the entire demo of Shuffle Along plus a rather intriguing nine-minute disc also never out before called A Tribute To Ruth King that documents a musical party. With Sissle as MC and Blake on piano, the program features composer W. Handy singing and playing cornet on his St. Louis Blues, Sissle and Blake performing Bandana Days and Im Just Wild About Harry, Madeline Green singing Its A Hit, Billy Banks performing Blakes Memories Of You, and Ruth King on piano dueting briefly with Blake. All in all, this is a fascinating disc. Sissle & Blakes Shuffle. Sissle & Blake's Shuffle. has been added to your Cart. Buy Now. An additional note: In 2016 Broadway Director George Wolfe mounted a lavish revival of Shuffle Along staring Audra McDonald. It was not the original libretto and had some different songs. McDonald became pregnant and had to leave the cast and Wolfe decided to close the show. Harbinger s recording of Sissle and Blake singing the score to the original production of Shuffle Along won the Grammy Award for its brilliant liner notes by Richard Carlin and Ken Bloom, authors of an upcoming biography of Eubie Blake to be published by Oxford University Press. They are repeating their assignment for this recording. Also included is a bonus track featuring remastering of the only surviving acetate of a historical Salute to Ruth King. Ruth King was a famous Cleveland DJ who celebrated black musicians. And such notables as Sissle and Blake and the legendary WC Handy, composer o

Shortly after World War I, Sissle joined forces with Blake to form a vaudeville music duo, The Dixie Duo. After vaudeville, the pair began work on the jazz musical revue Shuffle Along, which incorporated many songs they had written, and had a book written by F. Miller and Aubrey Lyles. When it premiered in 1921, Shuffle Along became the first hit musical on Broadway written by and about African Americans. All Moods. Background Music. Cool & Cocky.
