Album Info

Pomme Fritz subtitled The Orb's Little Album is a mini-album by English electronic music group The Orb, released on 13 June 1994 by Island Records. Produced to sustain the group during a period of mismanagement, it was their first album with German producer Thomas Fehlmann, as well as their last with input from Kris Weston, who appears in a much diminished role as engineer. The chaotic Pomme Fritz moved the group away from their melodic, ambient sound towards a more abstract, experimental style. Album 1994 6 Songs. Pomme Fritz Meat 'N Veg. The first hint that the Orb might have taken their work a bit too far, Pomme Fritz is a little album only 40 minutes that swaps the interterrestrial journey concept with some sort of psychedelic culinary preoccupation on tracks like More Gills Less Fishcakes and We're Pastie to Be Grill You. It was The Orb's first studio production released on Island Records. Pomme Fritz is a chaotic EP which Rolling Stone described as an aural feast despite its lack of cohesion and direction. Though Pomme Fritz reached as high as 6 on the UK charts, UK critics panned it as doodling and noted its absence of focus. Even Island Records hated it and didn't understand it at all&. Pomme Fritz is Alex taking the piss (in punk fashion) on the press and wishy washy fans, for The Orb to not be positioned and shelved as a "new age" artist commercially, nor to record redundant tracks with the same formula (which were beginning to sound dated amongst the arrival of progressive IDM).

Happy 25th birthday Pömme Fritz, June 13, 2019 A fine little album you are!

Menu item should have been called Pömme Fritz (ala Alles ist Schön!) Serves as an interloper between two great Orb dishes: UFOrb and Orbus Terrarum.

For me, the most notable part of this album is that it serves as a clear divider between a great body of work (all those albums that came before it), and a collection of work that was really quite poor (every album from this one on).The Orb really produced some inspired work, but they seemed to reject everything that had gone before and decided they could get away with releasing just about any old s*** (point to dissenters - the sales figures agree with me not you).Perhaps they felt they could move away from their earlier content towards the space occupied by Eno and other experimentalists. Perhaps they thought they could do their own "Music for Airports" in a modern context ? I think what is clear is that they had an exceptional ear for picking out and mixing great music that others had created. No more.

I think Orblivion is a pretty good album. Brian Eno told Pete Kember to tell Michael Sandison to tell me to listen to it again, so I did. I like it.

Since when has the number of units shifted, ever been an indicator of musical quality? Pomme Fritz and Orbus Terrarum are the only The Orb records I want or need. Quite a beautiful "downgrade", then!

The second disc here is marvelous. If you didn't like "Pomme Fritz" the first time around, get the reissue (available digitally for VERY cheap) and enjoy the second disc's worth of mixes/outtakes. It's just more high-quality early '90s Orbness, served sunny side up.

Great EP

I loved it ever since I heard it.recommended tracks:1 Pomme Fritz (Meat 'N Veg)2 More Gills Less Fishcakes4 Bang 'Er 'N Chips5 Alles Ist Schoen

Annoying vocal samples in track 2-3

What a misunderstood album, this mini album was slated at time of release, but this is 'classic' Orb,well put together, deep musical textures, with the usual tongue in cheek humour, not a change in direction, more a change in viewpoint. Though get the 2 disc edition with alternate mixes, class!! 8/10 Tim99

I interviewed Alex back in '08, he had some interesting things to say about Pomme Fritz:"Everyone was expecting Pomme Fritz to be another ‘Little Fluffy Clouds’ or another UFOrb album and Pomme Fritz was nothing like that and they got called short big time. But don’t forget that the Pomme Fritz album still went to number six which was such a fine achievement for me because it’s still such a weird album! Nothing makes any sense on that album! It’s all pads and Punk and aggression and passive nonsense. But at the same time it’s repetitive, dare I say it! But there’s the Godlike little synth sound all the way through… What we let the world know after Pomme Fritz is that was basically an album made out of one track remixed six times. Nobody got that until we told them that was that so they were all a bit miffed, the journalists. It wasn’t like one-upmanship but it was pretty close to that."

ok, those reviews are old, and i think another is warrented given the re-release. this album is stunning, and it ages better and better with time. i often think of it as one long track, and in many ways, it is, revisting the same themes on each track with each one still managing to have its own bizzare identity. listening to this when one is chillin with lucy, is a truly unforgettable experience. last year, they re-released this bad boy, and included a second disc of orignal jams and outakes from the recording session. this is a very good thing. the orb have always been known as quality remixers, taking the songs of others or their own an turning them into something quite different. you always know your going to get your money's worth when the orb delivers an alternate version of anything, and this is no exception. the tracks included here on the second disc do tend to have a same-ness to them, making them better suited for insertion into a general orb playlist, but this is to be expected, as theese are the songs that didnt quite make the cut for disc one. however, alot of really great ideas are explored and the second disc ends up sounding most similar to tracks 4-5 off the first disc. also, track 2 from disc two is either the same, or a very close version to the one included on the 2 disc version of UFOff, but all of that aside, this is totally worth it even if you already have a copy of pomme fritz. get this, and give your old copy to a friend who might enjoy it, as the orb should be shared!

One of the other reviews mentions that Alex admitted this album was 6 remixes of the same song. So you were right to think of it as one long track.

I love how the cover art parodies Pink Floyd's "Relics" album. But other than that, there's not much to love about the Orb's "little album" - many of the sounds come off as half-baked ideas; the record feels like a collection of leftovers & failed recipies.

I agree with everything said about this album in it's first review above, but I have a couple of things to add. When this album first came the Orb were well known for the hugeness of their abient, dubbed-out house tracks. U.F.Orb was a mega-album that pushed them into the world arena. Live '93 cemented the fact that they were one of "the" electronic acts to see. And believe me, they were awesome. Pomme Fritz was released as a teaser E.P. to hold you over until the next L.P. (Orbus Terrarum) was ready for release. The album is very experimental but is also very rich in the different sound textures that the Orb were messing around with in the studio. This album is a goldmine to anyone interested in sampling and sound manipulation technologies. Lots of bouncy basslines and sound washes. For anyone just getting into the Orb, you will eventually buy this album and it will be worth it. For all of the other people out there.....well, not everyone needs to know how cool we are.......keep listening..

The Orb at their most lysergic and darkside. A little album about food and some kind of sleight at big life.

this is one of the most psychedelic recordings i have ever heard, and it drifts through both good and bad trips. it's actually more like an ep or even a single, with radically remixed versions of essentially two tracks, plus a short outro. we start with a blissed out sleepy abstract dub with noodly guitar ("pomme fritz (meat 'n veg")), and then plunge into a sonic sound processing nightmare in which the "songs" ("more gills less fishcakes" and we're pastie to be grill you") break down and erupt with many weirdly distorted and processed sounds and vocals. this portion of the disc is hard to take, because it is distinctly "listener unfriendly." eventually, we move on to a more coherent bubbly track "bang'er 'n chips," which is then expanded on in sublime bliss out fashion on "alles ist schoen." the last track is a short, humorous swirl of sound ("his immortal logness"). the danceable sound of previous orb material is completely dispensed with, and there is a huge leap in terms of compositional and rhythmic sophistication. to the unitiated, however, the album can seem impenetrable, and on the second and third tracks, chaotic and annoying. the central theme of the album is defined by a repeated voice sample from an american television program called "saturday night live." the voice intones, "you've just had a heavy session of electroshock therapy, and you're more relaxed than you've been in weeks. all those childhood traumas, magically wiped away...along with most of your personality."
