Album Info

James McMurtry's fourth album of new material concerns itself with change. Showing a maturity that doesn't show itself much in the roots rock genre, It Had to Happen winds its way through many stories set to music. Sixty Acres deals with inheritance, while No More Buffalo, a standout cut, dwells on both natural and personal destruction. Tastefully done, McMurtry and his fellow travelers offer fine music done maturely. Album 1997 10 Songs. It Had to Happen. James McMurtry. Rock , Had to Happen. Released 1997. He was promoting his first album which had received accolades in the alternative press, and though the crowd was very thin, he played as if he were playing for thousands. I bought that album on cassette and still have it, but I hadn't thought much about him until recently when a friend to whom I had introduced McMurtry's music brought out a stack of his newer CDs for me to hear. Among those was It Had To Happen. When I first put it on, I was pleased but not overwhelmed. James McMurtry - It Had to Happen Condition: Brand New. Time left: 4d 16m 18s Ships to: Worldwide. It Had To Happen is one of the McMurtry albums my hand often skips when making a selection, and I’m not sure why, as it’s sincerely good.

The musicianship found on this outing, it’s a step above, where James experiments with new ideas, yet is still manic about his attention to the ‘every man’, along with some new musical concepts, including a grouping of more funky arrangements. His haunting and inspirational song “Paris” (France) opens the album, where he’s more sardonic than I’ve heard in a long time, a number that will just roll over you with intelligence and grace. Then there’s “For All I Know,” filled with that new funky attitude I was talkin’ about, stepping him out of the small town vision he wonders through so effectively, setting him into a new environment. “Sixty Acres” was another slow rolling keeper, a steamy song that will peel the wallpaper from your listening space, which of course is followed by insanely delicious “Jaws Of Life,” reminding me of the album Just Us Kids, a song that deals with getting older and the aches and pains that come with the passing of time, yet refusing to slow most of us down.

In effect, it’s a James McMurtry album delivered in the same context as all of the others, which I never tire of, yet is undefinably vested with the compelling nuance of something grander and more expansive. Yes, again I find myself drawing four numbers that make up the essential element of the record, another grouping of songs that I’ve strung together from his other albums, where I now have thirty-eight McMurtry songs that are simply the best of the best, being the ones that I reach for most of the time, though with an album such as It Had To Happen, my hand often pauses, and I’m glad it does, because sometimes the original release offers up a quintessential undefined element that can not be avoided.

The character of James McMurtry, which is real and not a personification, causes time to stand still, these songs implore you to listen intently, as the music paints actual images you’ll miss otherwise. His recordings are insightful, bent, often twisted and so matter of fact that they impart deep wisdom that you won’t recognize until you’re standing in the same time space as James. McMurtry records are the great musical equalizer, unappreciated national treasures, filled with stunning bass lines, passionate story telling and provocative energetic guitar playing that never ceases to amaze me, where if today’s radio had any imagination at all James McMurtry would be a household name … but then, I sort of enjoy being in on this well kept secret.
