When Buxtehude took over the post of organist at the Marienkirche in Lübeck he inherited the practice of performing public concerts in the weeks before Christmas. These were the so-called Abendmusiken, which had been started by his predecessor, Franz Tunder. During these concerts a large variety of vocal and instrumental music was performed, including large-scale vocal works which Buxtehude specifically composed for these occasions. The oratorio is generally known under the title Das jüngste Gericht. Shop Buxtehude. Dietrich, Kamp's Das jungste gericht CD for sale by pamina at on CDandLP - Ref:2956342511. Buxtehude was the famed organist and composer whom J. Bach made a 200-mile journey on foot to hear. His organ music toccatas, preludes and fugues, passacaglias, ciacconas, and chorale preludes greatly influenced Bach with their clarity of line, nobility, and often daring harmonic invention. His chorale music contains innovations such as the exchange of the normal roles of the orchestra and chorus in Gott hilf mir 'God help me': the orchestra plays the straight chorale tune while the singers provide elaborate ornamentations. The organ music of Dietrich Buxtehude is not solely an interesting precursor to the music of his later greater admirers but is a body of work full of beauty in its own right. These vibrant illustrative even exuberantly virtuosic organ works are here tackled admirably by Simone Stella on a modern Italian instrument which magically captures the colors of Danish organs. Dietrich Buxtehude was an organist and composer of the Baroque period. Not only the year, but also the country of his birth is uncertain and disputed. Dietrich Buxtehude was the organist at the Mariekirke in Helsingborg 16571658-1660 and in Helsingør 1660-1668, before moving to Lübeck in April 1668 and becaming organist of Marienkirche St. Mary's Church, as the successor to Franz Tunder. He was never a cantor, yet his interest in vocal music was profound. Dietrich Buxtehude is probably most familiar to modern classical music audiences as the man who inspired the young Johann Sebastian Bach to make a lengthy pilgrimage to Lubeck, Buxtehude's place of employment and residence for most of his life, just to hear Buxtehude play the organ. But Buxtehude was a major figure among German Baroque composers in his own right. Though we do not have copies of much of the work that most impressed his Read more contemporaries, Buxtehude nonetheless left behind a body of vocal and instrumental music which is distinguished by its contrapuntal skill, devotio. Dieterich Buxtehude was much more than just a church organist he composed cantatas, oratorios, chamber music and, at St Mary's in Lübeck, he organised some of the earliest public concerts ever held in a church. Music of the pieces of music featured in these Abendmusiken 'evening musics' have been lost, but in today's programme Donald Macleod presents an extract from what might be Buxtehude's only surviving abendmusik oratorio.
