The Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 36, is a symphony in four movements written by Ludwig van Beethoven between 1801 and 1802. The work is dedicated to Karl Alois, Prince Lichnowsky. Beethoven's Second Symphony was mostly written during Beethoven's stay at Heiligenstadt in 1802, at a time when his deafness was becoming more pronounced and he began to realize that it might be incurable. The work was premiered in the Theater an der Wien in Vienna on 5 April 1803, and was conducted by the composer. A German newspaper described his conducting as forceful, authentic, modern music and he was invited to conduct in Moscow. He was music director until 1937, but he never quite won the whole-hearted acceptance of Pittsburgh audiences, in part because he was a local boy, born in nearby Braddock. Best of Fritz Reiner Conducting The Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Fritz Reiner was a legend among conductors. Reiner gained conducting experience at a number of regional opera houses before eventually returning to Budapest in 1911 to serve at the city's Volksoper, where his reputation as a conductor of special abilities finally emerged. In 1938 he became the director of the Pittsburgh Symphony - one of several positions that established Reiner as a fine builder of orchestras, with a talent for steering ensembles toward new levels of quality and success. A number of Reiner's well-known recordings stem from his tenure there. Fritz Reiner, Chicago Symphony Orchestra Le Chant du rossignol, Symphonic Poem II. Chicago Symphony Orchestra Orchestra Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta, 1:46. Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Fritz Reiner Pictures at an Exhibition Promenade I. He conducted the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra from 1938 to 1948. After leaving the PSO Reiner conducted the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Under Fritz Reiner's direction the PSO enjoyed ten prolific years. The PSO signed a record contact with Columbia Records and was invited to perform abroad. Several noted composers made world premieres of their works with Reiner conducting the PSO. In 1942 during World War II Reiner accepted dozens women into the PSO for the first time. He was a genius, apart from all other conductors I've ever known. Orchestra: Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Conductor: Fritz Reiner. Composer: Ludwig van Beethoven. When I listen to Reiner's Beethoven I get the feeling that he sets the tempo and lets the music and orchestra play themselves you could say his Beethoven is very straight. None of his tempos are extremely slow or fast, though of course there are ones that are faster such as Zinman, Gardiner, and Haitink LSO, but for the most part, Reiner's tempos are well thought out
