Peter Schreier has undeniably his benefits, but I find his high, lyric, rather nasal tenor, quite inappropriate for the part. Furthermore, I have difficulties to accept harpsichord as a continuo instrument for this particular work and for all Bach's sacred works, for that matter. Bach's masterpiece was first performed at the Thomaskirche and although the 19th century revival began in Berlin, Mendelssohn and the Gewandhausorchester cemented its position in the canon. Riccardo Chailly's new recording nods to the weight of tradition yet the purposeful, rosy, Victorian bloom of his orchestra is lightly applied. Notable recordings of Johann Sebastian Bach's St Matthew Passion Matthäus-Passion are shown below in a sortable table. The selection is taken from the 253 recordings listed on bach-cantatas as of 2015, beginning with a recording from 1939 by a symphony orchestra and choir to match. Beginning in the late 1960s, historically informed performances paved the way for recordings with smaller groups, boys choirs and ensembles playing period instruments, taken to an extreme in recordings using only one. He is shown here as Tamino in Die Zauberflöte at the Berlin State Opera in 1972. Midway through his career, Mr. Schreier also turned to conducting. He would sometimes sing the Evangelist roles in Bachs St. Matthew and St. John passions as he led the performances. Schreiers voice might have lacked the honeyed tone of other tenors who specialized, as he did, in lighter lyric opera roles and German lieder. But he won consistent praise for a combination of technical know-how and musical insight. German tenor renowned for his performances of the St John and St Matthew Passions by Bach and operas by Mozart. The German tenor Peter Schreier, who has died aged 84, was not only an incomparable Evangelist in Bachs Passions and one of the most fastidious and expressive lieder singers of his generation, but also, in the world of opera, a leading Mozartian who made productive forays into less predictable repertoire. With a cantor church choirmaster and organist as his father, and having been reared as a chorister in the Dresden Kreuzchor, he could be said to have the music of Bach flowing. Peter Schreier remained with the choir as a tenor after his voice changed. In 1954, he began taking private voice lessons with the well-known Leipziger concert singer and singing pedagogue Fritz Polster 1954-1956, while working as a member of the Leipzig Radio Chorus.
