MacColl explains the notion of the ballad: Defined in its simplest terms, the ballad is a folksong that tells a storyis always narrative, and is always learned from the lips of others rather than by reading. It is appropriate then that they are sung by MacColl who himself played a role in English history through his affiliation to the communist parties of the 1930s which hindered his musical career at the time. James Henry Miller 25 January 1915 22 October 1989, better known by his stage name Ewan MacColl, was a British folk singer, songwriter, labour activist and actor. MacColl was born as James Henry Miller at 4 Andrew Street, in Broughton, Salford, Lancashire, to Scottish parents, William Miller and Betsy née Henry, both socialists. William Miller was an iron moulder and trade unionist who had moved to Salford with his wife, a charwoman, to look for work after being blacklisted in almost every. He returned to England in 1935 with some 500 songs collected and a deep and abiding interest in folk songs. In 1937, he went to sea with a whaling fleet, sailing to Antarctica and learning more sea shanties along the way. After returning to England, he chanced to hear a program about unemployment in America, and suggested a similar program to the BBC, which led to his being employed as a scriptwriter and reporter.
